New Skyscrapers ( Dan Spivey and "Mean" Mark Callous) vs Randy Harris & Agent Steel WCW Saturday Night 01-06-1990
Let's address the obvious elephant in the room.
Mean" Mark Callous is one of the greatest wrestling names of all time
Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about "Mean" Mark. In doing research for this entry, I just sort of assumed Mark got a couple year run in WCW and then made a move to WWF to become The Undertaker . I didn't realize this is Mean Mark's debut and in less than a year he will be debuting at the WWF Survivor Series. The crazy thing about watching Mean Mark wrestle is seeing just how big and athletic and fast he is, and within a year his gimmick is guy who moves slow. I know people shit on the older Undertaker stuff with the dives and the matches with a million kick outs but its obvious why he did that. He had to be well.....a slow wrestler for so long that he wanted to show people what he could do. It's hard not to look at this, his WCW debut, and see flashes of what Undertaker was doing late into his career. before his body and his brain broke down. The Undertaker is one of the most iconic characters in wrestling history, but it is interesting to wonder what a Mean Mark in WCW run would have looked like.
His partner in the New Skyscrapers is Dan Spivey, another man with an interesting career. I feel like extraneous circumstances held Dan from reaching his potential but I may be misremembering. He had achieved success with Sid Vicious as The Skyscrapers, a tag team I am certain you will be seeing on this blog. After Sid left WCW, they needed a replacement and you can do a hell of a lot worse than with "Mean" Mark Callous. Ironically, Dan Spivey is another wrestler with a very interesting what if. His short lived Waylon Mercy run will be discussed later on, but it is strange to have men with two similar yet different paths together.
Obviously the bar is set so high to replace Sid Vicious, so let's see if The New Skyscrapers are like New Coke and fail or if the New Skyscrapers are like New Coke Zero and are delicious. Delicious at....wrestling I guess
Their opponents tonight are Randy Harris and the masked Agent Steel. I love me a jobber in a mask, I mean that's got to be the ultimate gig right. You get your payday and nobody at a gas station makes fun of you for losing. I also assume he was another job guy doing double duty, but I can't prove it. The Skyscrapers are managed by Theodore Long who's suit game is on frigging point. Jim Ross and Kevin Sullivan on commentary for this one, and I cannot believe they let Kevin Sullivan's thick Boston accent on national TV.

Spivey is incredible at playing an unhinged maniac. Dan Spivey has got those crazy eyes , and in a smart move he keeps finding the ringside camera to show them off. He whips Agent Steel into the ropes and does a standing chokeslam for lack of a better term. I am so bad at play by play. Mean Mark with a big boot to the...stomach. That didn't go as planned. He does come off the ropes and gets huge airtime for a stomp to Steel's chest. It is so weird seeing The Undertaker move like this. He finally gets Steel down after some punches and climbs the top rope and then walks the second rope into an elbow. While on it's own, it's not a crazy spot, knowing just how big Mean Mark is makes it look absurd. He forces Steel to tag Harris and then whips Harris into the ropes. What Follows is ONE OF THE CRAZIEST JUMPING CLOTHESLINES I HAVE EVER SEEN. It was absolutely vicious. He then tags in Dan Spivey who DOES THE SID TAUNT! What a prick! One powerbomb later and The New Skyscrapers are victorious
A great, great squash and man I wish The New Skyscrapers were around longer. Obviously it worked out for Mean Mark, but this match makes me want to see more Dan Spivey. Mean Mark has the moves, but Dan Spivey clearly knows how to make squash matches fun and it's going to be great to see how he does over the course of this blog

TLDR Review
Mean Mark is above average. Dangerous Dan is Dangerously fun. Randy Harris is....randy for punishment?
