Jerry Flynn vs. Dave Burkhead WCW Worldwide 02-27-1999
Ultimately, this squash match blog is supposed to be variety. My hope is that as the blog goes on, I'll be able to find more and more obscure stuff and bring attention to wrestlers and matches that have been lost to time. With that in mind, I've really been trying to mix it all up. I'm trying to limit appearances by guys like Sid and Vader, and trying to spread out the years and promotions I cover. It's very early in the blog but there is just something I know I can't escape
WCW has the best squash matches
I'm not even talking in terms of quality, I'm referring to just the strangeness of it all. I'm sure WWF and WCW had the same amount of programming, but for whatever reason WCW had the more variety. The WCW roster so bloated in 1999 that the guys who were borderline enhancement talent got to become squashers in matches. We haven't even covered most of them yet, but it's fascinating when you realized how many people were employed by WCW that you can't help but wonder.....how?
Enter Jerry Flynn
Jerry Flynn's WCW run has baffled me for 20 years. Even as a child I couldn't grasp why this man was on television. Listen, he's not a terrible wrestler, but he looks absurd. Jerry Flynn was basically Danny McBride's Foot Fist Way 15 years earlier. A "karate expert" who looks like he's got to finish the match quickly because it's parents night at the strip mall dojo.
Not only that, but as one of my friends pointed out....he has the smile of a man who shat himself.
I dare you to look at him and not see that next time.
Let's see if I'm being too hard on the martial arts master of the mullet. We got Jerry Flynn taking on Dave Burkhead from a 1999 edition of WCW Worldwide. Eventually Jerry Flynn cut his hair and went the crew cut, but here he's planning on going into Y2K with the mullet still rocking. I do love the old WCW Terminator set with the special doors and the smoke coming out. It brings back so many fond childhood memories, like my grandfather loving Belfast Bruiser because he beat up the British guy.
His very first move is a spin kick to Burkhead that looked awful. He barely touched him and Burkhead went down like he got nailed. Not a great start, but then Flynn puts Burkhead in the corner and unleashes some kicks on him that look pretty good. Burkhead makes a comeback and drops, maybe the worst elbow I've ever seen in my life. Flynn able to counter with an ankle lock that sends Burkhead to the outside. Then he hits Burkhead with a spinning back kick to the chest that looks a lot better. I think I was being unfair earlier, I think the problem with Flynn's offense are the camera angles. This second one looked a lot better because it was shot a lot better. Inside the ring Flynn hits a clothesline and smiles because he knows deep inside he took a shit in his pants. Some elbows and chops follow, standard filling time squash match stuff. Burkhead in the corner and Flynn with a running spin kick that sends himself over the top. The camera angles betray Flynn again , because he didn't even touch Dave and Burkhead staggers like he was knocked out. Burkhead is really bad. Cross armbreaker and Flynn wins
This isn't very good, but I did enjoy Flynn's offense. Look if you're gimmick is Karate, do Karate and Flynn's gimmick is Karate so he did Karate. Not necessary to watch it, though I do wonder if Flynn would have better matches with a better wimpy. Dave Burkhead was really bad in this.
TLDR REVIEW
Dave Burkhead is bad. WCW Camera Work is bad. Jerry Flynn is not as bad as I thought
If you're interested in more condensed version of my thoughts, You can check out my Twitter where I talk about wrestling or stress out during Boston Celtics games. Hell, I'll even take suggestions for matches you want to see reviewed. You can also check out my Youtube where I make weird videos where I put on wigs in front of a camera to mask my true identity.
